$200 AI Comet Browser Now Free for All Users Directly Challenging Google Chrome
October 3 — Perplexity AI announced today that its AI-powered browser Comet is now available as a free download to users worldwide. According to the company, “millions” of users have joined the waitlist since the browser’s initial launch in July.
The move marks a dramatic shift in strategy for the product, which was previously offered as a premium subscription service priced at $200 per month.
By adopting a free-to-use model, Perplexity aims to compete directly with mainstream browsers, including Google Chrome.

Free Access with Premium Tiers
While Comet is now accessible to all users at no cost, paying subscribers still receive enhanced features and capabilities. According to TechCrunch, free users can access the sidebar assistant, and all users have access to personalized news feeds, project management tools, and shopping and travel assistance features.
Premium subscribers benefit from more powerful AI models, while existing Max subscription holders gain access to an email assistant that can draft replies and organize their inbox.
AI-Powered Automation
One of Comet’s standout features is its background assistant, which can perform complex tasks such as sending emails, adding the lowest-priced concert tickets to shopping carts, or finding the best direct flights on specific dates. These capabilities rely on “connectors” — tools that allow Perplexity to integrate with local applications and data sources.
Security Concerns Addressed
Shortly after launch, Comet faced scrutiny over a security vulnerability. Researchers discovered that the browser’s webpage summarization feature could be exploited by malicious websites that embedded invisible instructions in their pages.
When users requested a summary, the AI would execute these hidden commands with full user authorization, potentially exposing account-associated email addresses or accessing sensitive data from other browser tabs.
The vulnerability was disclosed by researchers from competing browser Brave. Perplexity has since patched this security issue.
