iOS 17 will be released next week: open third-party app stores. Apple will release the iOS 17 operating system at 1 am on June 6.
One of the biggest highlights of the system is “open sideloading”.
The so-called “sideloading” means that users can download applications from channels other than the official App Store, and developers can provide them to users without listing the programs in the Apple App Store.
That means developers are exempt from paying the usual 15% to 30% fee to list their programs on Apple’s App Store.
As we all know, the current installation of applications on iPhones must be done through Apple’s official APP Store.
The opening of sideloading means that the iOS 17 system will allow applications to be installed directly through third-party application markets or installation files, similar to the way Android phones currently play.
Android users can either download apps through the official app store developed by the manufacturer, or install apps through other means.
Apple has always been firmly against sideloading. Claims that the sideloading mechanism will “undermine iPhone users’ privacy and security protections,” leaving people vulnerable to malware, scams, data tracking, and other issues.
However, after the European Union’s “Digital Market Law” (DMA) comes into effect on November 1, 2022, Apple must comply with the DMA’s regulations, otherwise it will face a fine of up to 20% of its global revenue in violation of EU law.
For developers, this is very good news. The addition of a sideloading mechanism will allow them to publish and distribute applications more flexibly, while also saving expensive fees. According to statistics, in the past ten years, Apple’s total revenue from the App Store has exceeded 1.5 trillion US dollars.
It should be noted that iOS 17 sideloading may be limited to the European region, and other regions may still only be able to download applications in the Apple App Store.
