blendOS v3 releases first beta: Arch-based “immutable” Linux distribution

blendOS is an Arch Linux-based rolling distribution that automates the installation of software from supported distributions (Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu) into containers.

blendOS is committed to making the management software in various containers the same as the native way, and allowing each container to access the user’s home directory.

blendOS v3 releases first beta: Arch-based "immutable" Linux distribution

Like vanilla OS, blendOS is an immutable Linux distribution.

The so-called “immutable” means that the core/fundamental part of the system has been locked and remains unchanged to prevent unnecessary changes and damages by third-party applications, or cause wrong updates, thus providing stronger security and simple and reliable updates.

Other highlights of blendOS:

  • immutable operating system
  • Support for multiple package managers, including Apt, DNF, Yum, Pacman, and Yay
  • Supports multiple desktop environments
  • Flathub Store Desktop App

At present, the first Beta of blendOS v3 has been released, code-named “Bhatura”. The main changes are as follows:

  • Supports updating via install ISO without downloading individual packages from repositories for better stability
  • Introducing Akshara new tool that system drivers (packages) can use to install, lets users install custom packages onto a read-only overlay, and will be preserved and regenerated with the new system base so that the blendOS installation remains unchanged
  • Support for using the zsync file transfer program to reduce the size of updates by downloading only the differences between the previous and current version
  • Support for more container distributions, including AlmaLinux OS, Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch Linux, Rocky Linux, Neurodebian Bookworm, Kali Linux, Crystal Linux, and Debian GNU/Linux
  • Introduce the Assemble tool for building packages and images, and can also be used to build blendOS remix, and support for more desktop environments and window managers

See the release announcement for details.
