August 11th Update: Following Red Hat’s decision in June to discontinue public access to the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle, SUSE, and CIQ, key players in the Linux domain, issued a joint press release on Auguest 10th.

They announced the formation of the Open Enterprise Linux Association (OpenELA) with the aim of providing an “open and free” source code for Enterprise Linux (EL) to encourage the development of third-party Linux versions compatible with RHEL.

In June of this year, Red Hat made the decision to no longer publicly offer the RHEL source code.

They only made the CentOS Stream source code available as part of RHEL’s testing version.

Red Hat previously stated that future RHEL source code would be directly supplied to Red Hat’s commercial clients and partners through the Red Hat Customer Portal.

Red Hat’s move sparked widespread anger within the industry, with many questioning whether the company’s actions violated various open-source licenses, including the GPL.

However, Mike McGrath, Vice President of Red Hat’s Core Platform Engineering, explained that “Red Hat has invested a lot of time and effort in developing and maintaining RHEL.

The outcomes are also contributed to projects such as Fedora, CentOS Stream, or the Linux Kernel. Thus, Red Hat adheres to its own open-source licensing.”

Nevertheless, the industry clearly holds a different viewpoint. Earlier, SUSE announced an investment of over $10 million to develop a Linux distribution compatible with RHEL.

Now, Oracle, SUSE, and CIQ have gone a step further by establishing the Open Enterprise Linux Association (OpenELA), primarily focused on creating distribution versions compatible with Red Hat’s RHEL Enterprise Edition.

On its official website, OpenELA states, “Open source and community are at the heart of OpenELA’s DNA.

The OpenELA project is driven by the greater good of open-source communities and all downstream derivatives, encouraging a broader community involvement.

All contributors are welcome to join the OpenELA project.”

OpenELA plans to provide developers with a series of toolkits in the second half of this year, engaging the community in the development of RHEL-compatible distribution versions.

The initial phase of the project will be based on RHEL 8 and RHEL 9.

However, it remains uncertain whether the source code provided by OpenELA will be identical to that of RHEL.
