In recent years, smartphone memory capacity has been rapidly increasing, reaching up to 16GB, which is essentially on par with mainstream PC memory.
However, it seems this isn’t the limit for smartphone memory.
Recently, OnePlus, a smartphone manufacturer, announced the upcoming release of the ACE2 Pro phone with a maximum memory capacity of 24GB.
This undoubtedly sets a record in the industry, being the world’s first phone to feature 24GB of memory. Although the necessity of such extensive memory remains uncertain.
In fact, as early as the OnePlus ACE2 launched earlier this year, the phone already featured 16GB of memory, making it the phone with the highest memory globally at that time.
Now, OnePlus has added another 8GB, leaving little competition in the short term.
Li Jie, the President of OnePlus China, stated that OnePlus has consistently been a pioneer in large memory capacities for smartphones, and the ACE2 Pro will become a technological benchmark for the entire smartphone industry in the second half of the year.
OnePlus emphasizes that their exclusive 24GB large memory incorporates a set of proprietary and mysterious advanced technologies that enable it to deliver immense power.
However, it’s arguable that the significance of such extensive memory for smartphones is limited at this stage. For instance, iPhones start with 6GB, and users don’t find their performance lacking.
Samsung’s flagship phones generally start with 8GB, which most users find sufficient.
While it’s acknowledged that larger memory benefits performance, 24GB of memory still appears excessive and potentially leading to performance redundancy.
Despite the transition of mainstream PC memory capacities from 16GB to 32GB in the era of DDR5 memory, there are substantial differences between the applications and programs of smartphones and PCs.
Therefore, many people believe that expanding storage capacity, rather than memory, would be more beneficial for smartphones.
Nonetheless, OnePlus asserts that they will start from the system’s foundation to achieve a comprehensive Android memory restructuring.
Their memory gene recombination technology aims to fundamentally alter Android’s memory operation mechanism, effectively resolving efficiency issues in access, recycling, and allocation of memory at the core level. This, they claim, will completely eliminate Android’s lagging issues.
However, if this were the case, OnePlus’ approach should involve improving memory allocation mechanisms within the existing memory capacity.
Solving Android’s lagging issues at their root does not necessarily entail forcefully increasing memory.
Otherwise, how would this approach differ from other Android phones? Would it still manage more background apps without task-killing problems? As a result, OnePlus’ claims raise some questions.
Nevertheless, with the current affordability of memory chips, manufacturers looking for attention might find adding memory to be an appealing strategy.
After all, a phone with 24GB of memory is unprecedented and leaves an impression, regardless of its sales performance.
Furthermore, this new OnePlus model will also support 150W wired fast charging and will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. If priced competitively, it might still achieve decent sales figures.
