AMD CDNA3 architecture computing card MI300 first exposure: Four cores in one.
AMD CEO Dr. LIsa Su has personally confirmed that the next-generation Instinct computing card based on the new CNDA2 architecture will be launched in the second half of this year. Now, the next generation is coming.
The computing card of the first generation cDNA architecture is named Instinct MI100, code-named “Arcturus” (Arcturus), 7nm process, 120 computing units, 8192 cores, 7680 actually turned on, with 4096-bit 32GB HBM2, power consumption 300W.
The expected name of the CDNA2 architecture is Instinct MI200, code-named “Aldebaran” (Bi Suwu). It is the first to adopt a dual-core integrated package, that is, two GCDs, which may have 110 or 220 computing units, with 128GB HBM2e.
The consumer-grade RNA3 architecture will also use similar integrated packaging.
The AMD ROCm developer tool update also exposed four different device IDs of MI200, which are 0x7408, 0x740C, 0x740F, and 0x7410 , which seem to correspond to four different models.
Naturally, the CDNA3 architecture should be Instinct MI300, and there is no code name yet. If the names of red giants and red supergiants are still used, it should be the larger “Rigel”, which is Rigel/Orion β.
The bigger ones are “Antares”, which means Antares/Alpha Scorpio, and “Betalgeuse”, which means Betelgeuse/Orion alpha.
But rumors say that MI300 will be equipped with four chips, that is, four GCDs, so theoretically the core size can be doubled again.
MI300 should be released at the end of next year, when it will compete head-to-head with the Intel Xe HPC architecture Ponte Vecchio and the NVIDIA Hopper architecture H100.
The CDNA3 architecture is designed in this way, and the RDNA4 architecture should be similar. Then we will be able to see the top game cards in the four-core integrated package.
