AMD open source FSR 2.0 image quality optimization technology: Including high-quality anti-aliasing.
AMD has open sourced the latest image quality optimization technology: FSR2 FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 (FSR2 for short).
FSR 2 is AMD’s cutting-edge upscaling technology developed from the ground up to generate high-resolution output frames from lower-resolution inputs.
The technology, which allows gamers to have a better gaming experience on lower-performance or older GPUs, is open sourced on GitHub under the MIT license.
The open source FSR 1.0 is a space upgrade solution, while FSR 2.0 is a time upgrade solution.
FSR 2 uses cutting-edge temporal algorithms to reconstruct fine geometric and texture details, producing anti-aliased outputs from aliased inputs.
FSR 2 provides three buffers (depth, color, and speed) at render resolution, with optional reactive masks and exposure for optimal quality.
Based on this principle, FSR 2 technology is easier to integrate into games that already have a time-scaled rendering path.
Additionally, FSR 2 includes high-quality anti-aliasing that can replace any TAA within the game frame. Since it replaces TAA, any post-processing effects that require antialiased input need to be placed back, and any post-processing effects that require a depth buffer will need to be pre-scaled.
FSR 2.0 quality mode
FSR 2.0 has four different quality modes: Quality, Balanced, Performance, Ultra Performance (optional), which supports dynamic resolution scaling, where the source resolution is determined by a fixed performance budget to achieve a minimum frame rate. Second, optional configurable RCAS sharpening helps emphasize pixel detail.
FSR 2.0 performance
FSR 2.0 is designed to increase the frame rate of supported games, and as a temporal upgrade, it will be more demanding on the graphics card than a space upgrade such as FSR 1.0.
The following table lists the performance overhead caps for different classes of AMD GPUs and target resolutions for FSR 2.0 in quality and performance modes.

Auto exposure included, no sharpening.

Platforms supported by FSR 2.0:
- DirectX 12
- Vulkan
- Unreal Engine 4.26/4.27 and Unreal Engine 5 (plug-in form)
