The Intel 13th generation Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 are not able to push DDR5 memory in 2022: still expensive.

Intel first released DDR5 memory on the 12th -generation Core processor released at the end of November last year , officially opening the DDR5 era, and this year’s 13th -generation Core will further support it, and AMD ‘s Ryzen 7000 desktop processor will also join the DDR5 camp.

The characteristics of Zen4 architecture products can be summed up in ” four fives ” : for the first time, it is manufactured using TSMC ‘s 5nm process, the AMD platform supports the next-generation DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 channels for the first time, and the new AM5 package interface is introduced for the first time.

Intel ‘s 13th -generation Core Raptor Lake is also indispensable, and will further optimize support. Currently , the 12th -generation Core supports DDR5-4800 by default. It is reported that the 13th -generation will be upgraded to DDR5-5200 or even higher.

There have even been rumors before that Intel ‘s support for DDR5 memory is more aggressive, which will push manufacturers to mainly support DDR5 memory instead of mature DDR4 memory, and AMD has similar considerations.

After all, the Ryzen 6000 mobile version directly abandoned DDR4 memory.

Driven by the two kings of AMD and Intel , this year’s DDR5 memory share will be significantly improved compared to last year, but because the previous base is too low, DDR5 memory is still far from replacing DDR4 as the mainstream.

According to the forecast of Omdia , a research institute , in the entire DRAM market, the DDR5 memory market share will reach 10% in 2022 , and the share will further increase to 43% in 2024 , and more than half of the share will have to wait until 2025 .

Compared with the current DDR4 memory, which has been mature and stable for many years, DDR5 memory is still a new thing.

Manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are still in the early stage of technology and capacity improvement, resulting in DDR5 memory cost is still much higher, which takes two or three years. Time to complete the upgrade.
