DLSS 3.5 Officially Launched: Introduces Ray Reconstruction and 5x Training Data

At the Cologne Game Show in Germany, NVIDIA has officially unveiled the next generation of AI neural network technology – DLSS 3.5. DLSS was first introduced in March 2020, alongside the debut of the RTX 20 series, which marked the first support for real-time ray tracing.

Since then, it received upgrades, with DLSS 2.3 in November 2021, DLSS 3 in October 2022, and DLSS 3.1 in January 2023, and now it has taken another leap forward.

In contrast, AMD FSR 3, which was announced alongside the RX 7900 series in October of the previous year, has remained silent, failing to deliver on its promised release in the first half of 2023.

DLSS 3.5 introduces a groundbreaking feature called “Ray Reconstruction” (RR). This feature, powered by an AI network trained on NVIDIA supercomputers, replaces manually designed denoisers, resulting in higher-quality pixel generation between sampled rays.

This enhancement aims to elevate the ray tracing quality across all RTX graphics cards.

NVIDIA also claims that DLSS 3.5 boasts up to 5 times more data training for ray reconstruction compared to DLSS 3.

It incorporates a broader range of data from traditional games and game engines, enabling it to identify various ray tracing effects and differentiate between the quality of temporal and spatial elements.

It retains and scales data frequently used at high frequencies.

DLSS 3.5 is set to make its official debut in the autumn of this year, with the initial batch of games including:

1. “Alan Wake 2”: Scheduled for release on October 27th, it supports DLSS 3.5, panoramic ray tracing, and Reflex.

2. “Cyberpunk 2077” and “Phantom Liberty” (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty):These titles are set to release in September and will also support DLSS 3.5, panoramic ray tracing, and Reflex.

3. “Portal” RTX Edition: Upgrading to support DLSS 3.5 in the fall of this year.

Beyond gaming, DLSS 3.5 is expected to enhance the image quality of real-time 3D creative applications.

D5 Renderer, Chaos Vantage, and NVIDIA Omniverse are all gearing up to support ray reconstruction.
