Europe Achieves First-Ever 5G Satellite Call with 14Mbps Transmission Speed.

On September 24th, the world’s first 5G call via satellite was successfully established in Europe, thanks to the collaborative efforts of AST SpaceMobile and telecommunications giant Vodafone.

Furthermore, this test also achieved a data transmission speed of 14Mbps.

This groundbreaking 5G call was facilitated using the BlueWalker 3 test satellite, jointly developed by Vodafone, AT&T, and Nokia, utilizing chips designed by the UK-based company EnSilica.

The 5G call was placed from Mauna Kea in Hawaii, USA, to an engineer in Madrid, Spain, through Vodafone. The spectrum for this call was provided by AT&T via the BlueWalker 3 satellite, and the calling device was a factory-standard Samsung Galaxy S22. This test shattered previous records for data transmission speeds in satellite cellular networks, achieving a download rate of 14Mbps.

Abel Avellan, CEO of AST SpaceMobile, remarked, “This achievement represents another major technological leap for us, marking a transformation in how information is accessed.” Since the launch of the BlueWalker 3 satellite, the company has successfully ensured compatibility with all major smartphone manufacturers and supports 2G, 4G LTE, and 5G networks.

Tommi Uitto, President of Nokia Mobile Networks, extended his congratulations, highlighting the importance of satellite cellular networks in providing critical connectivity worldwide. He expressed pride in Nokia’s AirScale product portfolio for its key role in this network development.

AST SpaceMobile holds over 2,600 technology patents, with some currently in the application process. The company has established state-of-the-art research and development facilities in Texas, USA.
