FreeBSD released its Q2 report for 2022, which introduced the main work content and project progress from April to June 2022.

FreeBSD 2022 Q2 report: only $200k raised and continue RISC-V64 porting work.

Fundraising

FreeBSD’s goal this year is to raise at least $1.4 million against a spending budget of about $2 million. However, as of writing the Q2 report, the team has raised less than $200,000.

Work progress

In Q2 2022, FreeBSD made 243 source tree commits, 62 port commits, and 12 documentation tree commits. Here are some important changes:

  • Improved its Linux compatibility layer, improved ARM64 emulation layer, syscall tracing work and various fixes
  • Finished porting go to FreeBSD RISC-V64
  • System OpenSSH update
  • Ongoing work on LLDB multiprocess debugging support
  • Wireless Status improvements with various WiFi driver improvements such as Intel and Realtek wireless hardware
  • ZFS support in makefs
  • New Bluetooth configuration program Blued
  • Turns on shared page address randomization for 64-bit binaries by default on all architectures.

Other work in progress:

  • Improved support for FreeBSD Wirguard kernel modules, involving adding new ciphers and API support
  • Openstack support on FreeBSD, porting OpenStack components so that FreeBSD can act as an OpenStack host.
  • Bhyve Security Issue Support
  • FreeBSD manual improvements

Part of the above work progress comes from the power of the community, and part of the work is promoted by the sponsorship of the foundation. More details of the work can be read on the Q2 report page .
