Google acquires MicroLED company Raxium: Plans to revive Google Glass?
Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of Google Devices and Services, recently announced that Google has acquired Raxium, a startup focusing on MicroLED technology, which may help the company’s AR business a lot.
In fact, as early as last month, some consumers said that Google would acquire Raxium. The Information stated in the report that AR display devices produced with MicroLED technology can be more energy efficient while maintaining bright colors.
The company called Raxium has been established for 5 years and mainly focuses on the technology of MicroLED.
According to its official website, their MicroLED technology can narrow the center point distance between pixels to only 3.5 microns, compared to 50 microns for AMOLED screens used on smartphones.
Raxium is currently working on the monolithic integration of MicroLED, and The Information believes that this means that the same silicon as other chips can be used to make MicroLED screens. If successful, it will reduce the cost of MicroLEDs a lot.
After acquiring Raxium, Google’s AR development will benefit a lot.
As early as 2020, Google acquired eye maker North and is also said to be hiring engineers to develop an AR operating system.
In January this year, The Verge reported that Google is working on a new AR headset or device called Project Iris.
And if Raxium can really achieve the massive transfer technology of MicroLED, then Google will have a great advantage in AR display devices.
Google’s current main AR competitors are Microsoft, Apple, and Meta, all of which have invested a lot of resources in developing their own devices.
Rick Osterloh believes that Raxium’s expertise in display technology will be an important part of Google’s future investment in building its own devices.
