Google Chrome Browser to Roll Out Weekly Security Updates: Enhancing User Protection

News on August 9, Google has announced that it will accelerate the update frequency of its Chrome browser to enhance users’ online security.

Starting this week, stable version users of Chrome browser will receive security updates on a weekly basis instead of the previous bi-weekly schedule.

These security updates will coincide with the release of Chrome version 116 to the stable channel this week.

By transitioning to a weekly security update release cycle, Google aims to narrow the “patch gap” compared to the previous bi-weekly patch releases.

Google states, “While we cannot entirely eliminate the possibility of n-day attacks, the weekly cadence of Chrome security updates enables us to release security fixes on average 3.5 days sooner, significantly reducing the time window for n-day attackers to develop and deploy attack methods against potential victims, making such attacks more challenging.”

Google has asserted that if any actively exploited security vulnerabilities are discovered in the Chrome browser, the company will promptly address and release an unscheduled patch.

However, with Google’s shift to a weekly security update schedule, it is anticipated that such unscheduled updates will be minimized.
