Google Introduces AI-Powered Scam Detection in Chrome for Android Using “Gemini Nano”

To better protect Chrome users from online scams, Google is rolling out a new AI-powered security feature that issues real-time alerts for suspicious spam notifications in the Android version of Chrome.

According to tech news outlet TechCrunch, Google has enhanced Chrome’s anti-phishing capabilities by integrating its on-device large language model (LLM), Gemini Nano, into the browser’s desktop and mobile versions.

This latest update significantly boosts Chrome’s Safe Browsing features. Google claims that the enhanced protection mode now offers twice the security compared to the standard setting.

Gemini Nano enables the browser to rapidly analyze and identify suspicious website behaviors in real time, allowing it to proactively detect and warn users about evolving scam tactics. The protection will soon be expanded to cover a broader range of scam types and additional Android devices.

Google has also added AI-based spam detection to Chrome’s Android notification system. When malicious sites attempt to deceive users via push notifications, the AI will display a warning. Users can then choose to unsubscribe from such notifications or review the blocked content. If users believe a warning was triggered by mistake, they’ll have the option to re-enable notifications from that site.

A key advantage of Gemini Nano is that it operates entirely on the user’s device, meaning that data is processed locally without being sent to external servers — a move that enhances user privacy and data security.

In addition to these Chrome updates, Google is also using AI in Search to detect and block hundreds of millions of scam-related search results each day. The company reports that its AI-based detection system is now identifying 20 times more fraudulent sites than before. Notably, scams impersonating airline customer service centers have dropped by over 80% since the system was deployed.

“This AI rollout isn’t just about detection,” Google emphasized. “It’s about actively blocking and responding to threats. We’re using cutting-edge AI to raise the security bar across all our products and significantly reduce fraud.”
