iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max to Feature Upgraded Periscope Telephoto Cameras: Costs May Increase by 30%。
Reportedly, the periscope telephoto camera from the iPhone 15 Pro Max will make its appearance in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max next year, but with some changes.
Unfortunately, Apple’s decision to elevate the lens specifications in response to rising demand may lead to a 30% increase in production costs.
Currently, it remains unclear whether Apple will pass on these added costs to customers in 2024.

With the growing demand for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, anticipation for the upgraded periscope telephoto camera in the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max for next year is steadily rising. To meet the demands of 2024, Apple has had to find ways to improve the camera module. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in a Medium blog post, noted that the tech giant has requested its suppliers to enhance the lens specifications to improve production yield. This process should result in more precise lens components and compensate for module assembly tolerances.
Regrettably, this decision comes with a significant drawback. Ming-Chi Kuo pointed out that increasing the lens specifications and expanding production will mean a roughly 30% price increase for the telephoto lens of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, bringing it to approximately $6-6.5 USD. However, if both Pro models next year manage to upgrade their telephoto lenses, by 2024, iPhone shipments with telephoto lenses are expected to increase by approximately 110%.
“The iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro are set to feature periscope telephoto cameras, likely maintaining the current high specifications to ensure camera performance and production yield. I predict that iPhone shipments with periscope telephoto cameras will increase by approximately 110% year-on-year in 2024, reaching 70-80 million units.”
While a 30% increase in telephoto camera costs is challenging for any company to absorb, Ming-Chi Kuo’s report suggests that Apple has agreed to pay the premium as long as it receives full support from its supplier, Largan Precision.
Reportedly, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max next year will come equipped with telephoto cameras, with the possibility of the largest model featuring an exclusive “super-telephoto” device to boost sales. Additionally, there may be three new cameras for wireless interaction with Apple Vision Pro.
