Let’s Encrypt has announced that it will discontinue certificate expiry email notifications starting in June 2025.

This means that users will no longer receive proactive email alerts reminding them to renew their certificates before expiration.

The organization has provided several reasons for this decision:

  1. Automation Adoption: The majority of users have already implemented automated processes to renew and update certificates, making manual notifications unnecessary.

  2. Cost Considerations: Sending email notifications incurs annual costs amounting to tens of thousands of dollars. As a nonprofit, ISRG (Internet Security Research Group), which operates Let’s Encrypt, aims to manage costs efficiently.

  3. Infrastructure Simplification: ISRG wants to focus on adding more valuable services to Let’s Encrypt while reducing unnecessary infrastructure complexity.

  4. Privacy Concerns: To send email notifications, Let’s Encrypt needs to store users’ email addresses. Given its commitment to privacy protection, ISRG prefers to avoid retaining users’ personal data.

Recommended Actions for Users

To ensure continued security and avoid certificate expiration issues, Let’s Encrypt strongly recommends that websites adopt automated strategies for certificate issuance, renewal, and deployment. This approach minimizes human intervention while ensuring seamless certificate management.

For additional security, users can also deploy monitoring services to track certificate status. ISRG suggests using Red Sift Certifications Lite, a free service that monitors up to 250 certificates. Other alternatives include Datadog SSL Monitoring and TrackSSL.

Some organizations, such as BlueDot Network, utilize open-source monitoring solutions like Uptime Kuma. When deployed via Docker, Uptime Kuma can monitor website uptime and certificate expiration, issuing alerts up to 14 days before expiration to allow administrators to take necessary actions.

As Let’s Encrypt phases out email notifications, users are encouraged to transition to automated solutions and monitoring services to ensure uninterrupted website security.
