LibreOffice 7.6 was initially launched on August 21, 2023, featuring enhancements such as support for zoom gestures on touchpads, document themes, theme definition import and export for ODF and OOXML documents, and numerous improvements in font handling.

The Document Foundation states that support for the LibreOffice 7.6 branch will continue until June 12, 2024, with the next maintenance update scheduled for release in January 2024.

Today, the Document Foundation unveiled the LibreOffice Viewer application for Android devices on the Google Play Store. This application allows Android users to view documents in both standard ODF (Open Document Format) and proprietary MS Office formats.

IT Home provided the official description:

You may already know LibreOffice from your desktop – a free and open-source office suite (successor to OpenOffice) with over 200 million users worldwide. It is secure, respects your privacy, and does not share your documents with others. It is now available in a simplified form for Android, allowing you to view documents in the following formats:

  • Open Document Format (odt, ods, odp, odg)
  • Microsoft Office 2007–365 (docx, xlsx, and pptx)
  • Microsoft Office 97–2003 (doc, xls, and ppt)

Which features in Microsoft Office are beyond the reach of LibreOffice?

While LibreOffice is a robust office suite with many features comparable to Microsoft Office, there are some areas where Microsoft Office may have certain advantages or features that LibreOffice doesn’t fully replicate. Here are a few features or aspects where Microsoft Office might have an edge:

  1. Integration with Microsoft Ecosystem:

    • Microsoft Office is tightly integrated with other Microsoft products and services, such as OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook. This integration can provide a seamless experience for users deeply embedded in the Microsoft ecosystem.
  2. Advanced Excel Features:

    • Excel in Microsoft Office is known for its advanced data analysis features, including Power Pivot, Power Query, and advanced charting capabilities. While LibreOffice Calc is powerful, it may not offer the same level of sophistication in these advanced features.
  3. Outlook for Email and Calendar Management:

    • Microsoft Outlook is a comprehensive email and calendar management tool. While LibreOffice includes an email client (Thunderbird), it may not match the depth of integration and features found in Outlook.
  4. Advanced PowerPoint Features:

    • Microsoft PowerPoint offers some advanced features in terms of multimedia presentations and animations that may not be fully replicated in LibreOffice Impress.
  5. Business Intelligence Tools:

    • Microsoft Office includes tools like Power BI for business intelligence and data visualization. LibreOffice does not have an equivalent tool built into its suite.
  6. Collaboration Features in Word:

    • Microsoft Word offers real-time collaboration features through Microsoft 365, allowing multiple users to edit a document simultaneously. While LibreOffice has collaboration features, they may not be as streamlined or feature-rich.
  7. Cloud Integration:

    • Microsoft Office has strong integration with cloud services such as OneDrive, facilitating seamless storage, sharing, and collaboration. LibreOffice does offer integration with cloud services but may not have the same level of integration as Microsoft Office.
  8. Access Database Management:

    • Microsoft Access is a powerful database management tool that is not directly comparable to any single application in LibreOffice. While LibreOffice Base provides some database functionality, it may not match the capabilities of Access.

It’s important to note that LibreOffice is a powerful and free open-source alternative, and for many users, it provides all the necessary features for everyday productivity. The choice between LibreOffice and Microsoft Office often depends on specific needs, preferences, and the level of integration required with other tools and services.
