Linux Kernel 6.6 confirmed as long-term support version, Supported until December 2026
News reported on November 17 that the Linux 6.6 kernel was released last month.
This is a major update that includes new features, hardware support, security enhancements and performance improvements.
Today the kernel version was officially confirmed as a long-term support (LTS) release.
Linux kernel maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman confirmed that Linux 6.6 is a long-term support version and will be maintained and supported until December 2026. Linux 6.1, 5.15 and 5.10 will reach the end of their life cycle at the same time.
The long-term support version of Linux was previously 5 years, but under the new adjustment, LTS is shortened to 3 years.
IT House previously reported that Linux Kernel 6.6 mainly introduces the EEVDF scheduler, implements Shadow Stack support, adds the user space API required by the Mesa NVK Vulkan driver to the Nouveau DRM driver, and continues to support the upcoming Intel and AMD platform.
In addition, Linux Kernel 6.6 also supports changing the charger mode, fan and eGPU settings of ASUS devices, supports keyboard backlight control on more Lenovo IdeaPad devices, and supports peripherals such as new Mellanox driver devices.
