Linux Mint, the popular Ubuntu-based Linux distribution, is about to release its latest version 21.2.

According to the official monthly update of Linux Mint, this version will add touchpad gesture support to the Cinnamon desktop environment, allowing users to manage windows, workspaces, tiles, and media controls through actions such as sliding and zooming. This feature will support touchpads, touchscreens and tablets.

Linux Mint’s touchpad gesture support is based on the open source software TouchEgg, which allows users to customize a variety of gestures and perform different operations in different applications.

The Linux Mint developers have modified Muffin (Mint’s window manager) to accommodate TouchEgg and Cinnamon desktop setups. This means that users can use two-finger, three-finger, scroll and swipe gestures throughout the Cinnamon interface.

The beta ISO image of Linux Mint 21.2 has entered the testing phase, and it is expected that an official beta version will be released later this month for users to download and try.

The purpose of beta releases is for developers to find and fix last-minute bugs, edge cases, or unexpected problems. The stable version of Linux Mint 21.2 is expected to be released in early July.

In addition to touchpad gesture support, Linux Mint 21.2 will also bring some visual improvements, including new Cinnamon style and folder icons, etc. Linux Mint 21.2 is still based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, but includes more new features and performance improvements.
