Microsoft Drops Intel 10th Gen Support in Windows 11 24H2

Microsoft Ends Support for Intel 10th Gen Processors in Windows 11 24H2, Marking the End of the ‘Comet Lake’ Era.

Up to three generations of Intel processors are excluded from Microsoft’s official support list for the latest version of Windows 11.

Windows 11 24H2 may no longer support Intel 8th, 9th, and 10th Gen Core processors.

Yes, you heard it right! Microsoft appears to be dropping support for several generations of Intel processors in the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 release. Users with these processors will be unable to receive the 24H2 update, creating challenges for millions of devices still running on these CPUs.

Recently, Microsoft announced that it would exclude Intel’s 8th, 9th, and 10th Gen processors from the supported hardware list for Windows 11 version 24H2. This change affects both desktop and laptop processors. The decision is particularly surprising because Intel’s 8th, 9th, and 10th Gen CPUs support TPM 2.0, a key hardware-based security requirement for Windows 11. Despite this, Microsoft has opted to support only Intel 12th Gen and newer processors going forward.

This update does not mean that users with these older CPUs cannot run Windows 11 on their systems. However, they may stop receiving the latest Windows updates. The move has sparked surprise and disappointment among users, especially considering that the 10th Gen processors, released between 2019 and 2020, were eligible for Windows 11.

According to Microsoft, only processors meeting their “design principles” for security and reliability will be supported in the latest version of Windows 11. Microsoft has also added several new processor models from Intel and AMD to the compatibility list. For Windows 11 24H2, AMD’s 8000 series processors (desktop and Pro mobile series) will be supported.

In summary, anyone currently using Intel 8th, 9th, or 10th Gen processors—including flagship models such as the Core i9-9900K and i9-10900K—will need to upgrade their hardware to continue receiving the latest and upcoming Windows 11 updates.
