Scarf is a California-based company that builds maintainer-friendly tools for open source download and adoption metrics for efficient, observable, and fair software distribution.

Scarf currently collects metadata and analytics data for about 2,000 open source software packages, and more new projects are being added every week.

Scarf takes two different approaches to analyzing usage data to get more accurate statistics on downloading and using open source software. The first method relies on downloading headers and metadata.

A second approach to collecting usage data involves having projects add Scarf-specific elements to their documentation, README, and other content.

This enables projects to track their own growth by getting metrics on who read their docs, most active pages, etc. By combining these two methods, more accurate information can be obtained.

Open Source Usage Metrics Q1 2023

According to Scarf statistics, in the first quarter of 2023, downloads of open source projects increased by nearly 60% compared to the previous quarter, and the total downloads of open source software exceeded 240 million times (less than 0.5% of this total downloads from new packages added in Q4 2022 and Q1 2023).

The number of unique endpoints downloading open source software packages increased approximately 5 percent quarter-over-quarter to a peak of just over 6.2 million unique endpoints (unique endpoints are unique servers or computers downloading software).

Open source growth in the enterprise:

According to the statistics in the first quarter of 2023, the companies that download the most open source software include:

  • Oracle
  • apple
  • cisco
  • Microsoft
  • General Motors
  • Dell
  • Intel
  • disney
  • Cigna
  • J.B. Hunt Transport Services

Between the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023, the number of enterprises downloading open source software increased by 18.5%, but the total downloads of enterprises decreased by 26%.

You don’t have to worry too much about the sharp drop in downloads, because the release cycle of new versions and subsequent test versions of commercial open source projects will largely affect downloads.

Additionally, views of open source documentation have grown by 400% over the past quarter, which means engineers and developers are using open source projects more.

In the first quarter of 2023, 220,000 engineers participated in the documentation of open source projects, and the cumulative page views were close to 8 million pages, more than double the more than 3 million page views in the previous quarter.

Regional Usage of Open Source Software:

In the first quarter of 2023, the number of open source software downloads in many countries around the world has risen significantly, with Russia (up 3.2 times), Ireland (up 2.9 times) and the Netherlands (up 2.9 times) leading the way.

Downloads in all countries nearly quadrupled from the previous quarter; China ranked seventh (up 1.9x), India 10th (up 1.6x), while the U.S. grew only 1.4x and ended up missing the top 10.
