When it comes to the sudden surge in popularity of generative artificial intelligence, two names cannot be ignored: ChatGPT and the entity behind it, OpenAI.
However, recent reports suggest that OpenAI might be inching towards bankruptcy, and the very reason behind its prominent fame, ChatGPT, is at the center of it.
On August 13th, TechQuick reported that according to a recent publication by Analytics India Magazine, the operational costs for ChatGPT service amount to approximately $700,000 per day.
Despite OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to monetize through GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, the organization has yet to generate sufficient revenue, failing to achieve a balanced financial status.
Amidst the unpromising commercial prospects, the user base of ChatGPT has also been gradually declining. In July, the user count plummeted by 12%, from 1.7 billion to 1.5 billion users.
Furthermore, the introduction of generative AI models from other companies and some open-source models has also impacted OpenAI’s market presence to a certain extent.
Given the cumulative impact of these factors, without additional financial injections, OpenAI might find itself compelled to file for bankruptcy by the end of 2024.
