OpenAI Partners with AMD for Massive 6 Gigawatt GPU Deployment
October 6, 2025 — OpenAI and AMD announced today a multi-year strategic partnership to build next-generation AI infrastructure, marking a significant shift in the AI computing landscape.
The collaboration will see OpenAI deploy AMD GPUs at an unprecedented 6-gigawatt scale, with initial installations beginning in the second half of 2026.

Initial 1GW Deployment Planned for 2026
Under the agreement, OpenAI will begin with a 1-gigawatt installation of AMD’s Instinct MI450 series GPUs in late 2026, representing just the first phase of a much larger infrastructure buildout. The full 6-gigawatt deployment will position AMD as a major player in powering OpenAI’s AI training and inference workloads, which have traditionally relied heavily on NVIDIA hardware.
Comprehensive Technical Collaboration
The partnership extends beyond simple hardware procurement. OpenAI and AMD will engage in deep technical collaboration, including:
- Large-scale deployment of AMD’s Instinct MI450 series GPUs
- Integration of AMD’s rack-scale AI solutions
- Joint development and optimization of next-generation products
- Sharing of technical expertise to refine product roadmaps
- Multi-generational cooperation on both hardware and software development
This level of integration suggests OpenAI is seeking to diversify its chip suppliers and work closely with AMD to tailor solutions specifically for its needs.
Performance-Based Stock Warrant
As part of the deal, AMD will issue performance-based warrants to OpenAI for up to 160 million shares, with rights vesting upon achievement of specific milestones. This structure aligns both companies’ interests and provides OpenAI with potential equity upside tied to the partnership’s success.
Addressing Global AI Demand
Both companies emphasized that the partnership aims to accelerate the future of high-performance AI computing and build infrastructure capable of meeting surging global AI demand. As AI models continue to grow in size and complexity, the need for massive computational resources has become a critical bottleneck in the industry.
The announcement represents a significant win for AMD in the competitive AI accelerator market and signals OpenAI’s commitment to building a more diversified and robust infrastructure foundation for its AI development efforts.
