New Linux driver patch submission: RISC-V platform will be compatible with AMD graphics cards such as Radeon RX 7900 XTX

News on November 24, Samuel Holland, an engineer at fabless semiconductor company SiFive, submitted a new driver patch two days ago to add support for AMD Navi graphics cards to RISC-V processors.

RISC-V CPU is currently compatible with AMD’s old x86 GCN GPU, but RISC-V does not yet provide support for Navi architecture-driven GPUs due to the use of different graphics codes.

According to the driver description, users can use AMD Navi graphics cards on motherboards compatible with RISC-V processors such as SiFive HiFive Unmatched.

The driver also adds CONFIG_DRM_AMD_DC_FP initialization code to enable kernel-mode FPU support.

This code is currently under review and is expected to be merged into the Linux 6.8 kernel. After going online, users can use new AMD graphics cards such as Radeon RX 7900 XTX on the RISC-V platform.

While the RISC-V platform’s compatibility with modern GPUs is a major milestone, it will take several years to run AAA games and content creation tools on the RISC-V platform.
