Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 Announced: New 1+4+3 CPU Architecture and Five Firsts for the Series
On May 15, Qualcomm officially launched the latest addition to its Snapdragon 7 lineup: the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, designed for premium smartphones. Positioned just below flagship level, it delivers near-flagship performance, connectivity, and entertainment capabilities.

Snapdragon Platform Tiers at a Glance
The Snapdragon family is divided into four tiers:
-
Snapdragon 8 Series – Flagship line offering cutting-edge performance and technology.
-
Snapdragon 7 Series – High-end range, focused on delivering user-favorite features.
-
Snapdragon 6 Series – Aimed at mainstream users and mid-range devices.
-
Snapdragon 4 Series – Entry-level chips that provide all essential functions.
Within each tier, multiple sub-models target different needs. In the Snapdragon 7 series:
-
Snapdragon 7+ leads the line with top-tier performance and efficiency (now in its third generation).
-
Standard 7 series chips offer a well-balanced blend of performance and value.
-
Snapdragon 7s (also in its third generation) is fine-tuned to bring key premium features at a lower cost.
Qualcomm’s internal research reveals that in the $400–$600 price segment—the target range for the Snapdragon 7 series—users prioritize professional-grade photography and video capabilities. Other top concerns include 5G and Wi-Fi connectivity, gaming performance, generative AI, and high-resolution audio.
Snapdragon 7 Gen 4: Key Enhancements
The new Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 delivers a rich multimedia experience powered by multiple tightly integrated IP blocks and built on TSMC’s advanced 4nm process for excellent energy efficiency.
New 1+4+3 CPU Architecture
For the first time in the 7-series, Qualcomm is using a 1+4+3 CPU configuration, featuring:
-
1x Cortex-A720 prime core at 2.8GHz
-
4x Cortex-A720 performance cores at 2.4GHz
-
3x Cortex-A520 efficiency cores at 1.8GHz
This setup is paired with a larger L3 cache for improved performance.
Compared to its predecessor (Snapdragon 7 Gen 3), the new chip boasts up to 27% better multi-core CPU performance. Its architecture is also more advanced than competing platforms in this segment.
Enhanced GPU Performance
The GPU has seen a 30% boost in graphics rendering speed over the previous generation.
In real-world gaming:
-
In Honor of Kings (5v5 team battle), it delivers nearly 120 fps at a 26% better power efficiency than Gen 3 and 34% better than rivals.
-
In Zenless Zone Zero, average frame rates exceed 52 FPS, with a 20% efficiency gain over the previous generation.
It also supports select Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, such as:
-
Adaptive Game Quality for dynamic CPU/GPU performance tuning to prevent lag.
-
Qualcomm Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0 for intelligent resource management in high-stress scenarios.
All of this is achieved without compromising battery life.
Significant AI Improvements
AI is central to mobile performance today, and the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 delivers:
-
65% improvement in overall AI performance compared to its predecessor.
-
Enhanced capabilities in image classification, shopping recognition, image segmentation, language processing, and super-resolution.
It supports a wide range of industry-standard AI models, including Baidu Wenxin, Tencent Hunyuan, MiniMax, DeepSeek, and RWKV.
Notably, it’s the first Snapdragon 7 chip to support Stable Diffusion 1.5, enabling fast on-device image generation.
Qualcomm emphasized that raw TOPS numbers don’t reflect real-world AI performance and thus didn’t provide specific figures.
Smarter Sensors and Context Awareness
The Qualcomm Sensing Hub has been significantly upgraded:
-
75% increase in memory
-
Improved performance and reduced power consumption
Thanks to these upgrades, the platform supports AI Activity Recognition 2.0, which enables accessibility features like motion sickness relief displays. For instance, animated dots appear on the screen edges to provide a visual cue aligned with vehicle motion, helping reduce symptoms of nausea during travel.
Camera Innovations
Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is the first in its series to support hardware-based electronic image stabilization, offering near tripod-level steadiness—especially useful during movement.
Other camera features include:
-
Video retouching
-
Wide-area multi-frame noise reduction
-
Hardware-level AI enhancements for auto-exposure, autofocus, and auto white balance (3A)
Next-Gen Connectivity
Integrated with Qualcomm’s latest 5G modem and video system, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 supports:
-
3GPP Release 17 standard
-
Peak download speeds up to 4.2 Gbps
-
Global Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA)
-
NB-NTN satellite communication
With Qualcomm Smart Network Selection 3.0, the chip can dynamically choose the best network for specific scenarios (e.g., gaming in a crowded concert or uploading photos in an elevator) for smoother, more stable connectivity.
It also debuts support for Qualcomm XPAN, which enables seamless handover between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi during voice calls, music streaming, or AI assistant interaction—ensuring consistent connection and audio quality.
Additional wireless features include:
-
Wi-Fi 7 with peak speeds of 5.8 Gbps
-
Bluetooth 6.0 and Bluetooth Channel Sounding (another first for the series)
With its numerous firsts and a robust focus on performance, efficiency, AI, and connectivity, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 marks a significant leap forward for high-end smartphones in the mid-premium segment.
