Qualcomm is planning to launch the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 for smartphones next year, featuring the company’s first custom Oryon core.

While we eagerly anticipate the potential surprises in the CPU’s design that could rival Apple’s A-series chips, there are rumors worth noting about the chip’s all-new Adreno 830 GPU.

Although detailed specifications have not been provided, early results from 3DMark Wild Life Extreme suggest that the next-gen graphics processor in Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could be up to 10% faster than Apple’s M2.

While the leaker, Revegnus, did not provide screenshots of 3DMark Wild Life Extreme, he claims that the Adreno 830 scored 10% higher than the Apple M2 in the same test. It’s important to note that the M2 comes in two versions, each with a different number of GPUs, with the highest configuration featuring up to 10 GPU cores. Reportedly, the Adreno 830 scored 7200 points, aligning with a 10% performance difference compared to the M2 with 8 GPU cores.

3DMark’s Wild Life Extreme test is designed to push smartphone and tablet chipsets to their thermal limits, assessing their efficiency levels and how they handle sustained workloads over a period of time. It’s rumored that both the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and MediaTek Dimensity 9400, set to launch next year, will be produced using TSMC’s 3nm process technology, potentially leading to improved energy efficiency compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and the upcoming Dimensity 9300.

The Adreno 830’s test results represent our first encounter with it, and it’s likely that these are engineering samples tested in a controlled environment where the chips experience minimal throttling and are not constrained by compact or suboptimal cooling solutions. However, when the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 appears in a variety of Android flagship smartphones next year and undergoes testing in various high-humidity climate conditions, it will pose new challenges.

The leaker also provided some Geekbench 5 single-core and multi-core scores for Qualcomm’s high-end SoCs in 2024. While these scores are impressive, we advise readers to approach all this information with caution, especially since it’s still early days, with the first wave of phones powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processors yet to hit the market.
