Tesla Model Y and other models have serious attenuation of battery life at low temperatures

“Consumer Reports” actual measurement confirms that Tesla Model Y and other models have serious attenuation of battery life at low temperatures.

Compared with running at high speeds, low temperature weather is the main unfavorable factor for the attenuation of battery life of electric vehicles.

Even car companies such as Tesla and Ford cannot perform as expected.

Recently, Consumer Reports, an authoritative and well-known magazine in the United States , did  Endurance test of batteris on EV and tested Tesla Model Y long battery life, Ford Mach-E long battery life, Hyundai loniq 5 and Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S under three different temperatures.

The result is not surprising. The low temperature environment has a great impact on the battery life of these cars, but the most obvious performance is the global electric car sales champion “Tesla Model Y”.

Even if the external temperature is not low enough to affect the battery life, It also still failed to achieve its own calibrated EPA range of 326 miles (approximately 524.65 kilometers).

According to reports, the test team was driving at a high speed at a speed of 112 km/h, and the actual cruising range calculated by Model Y dropped to 299 km.

For comparison, the Ford Mach-E has an official range of 434km and a range of 302km in -8C frigid temperatures, while the Hyundai loniq5 with an EPA rating of 412km has an actual range of 294km in cold weather ; The EPA battery life of the Volkswagen ID.4 is 386 kilometers, and the actual battery life in cold weather is 273 kilometers.

In mild weather conditions with temperatures of 18°C, all four EVs mentioned above have improved range by about 50-70 miles, but are always lower than the official figures.

Subsequently, “Consumer Reports” conducted a test in a warm weather of 29°C, and the results showed that some models can meet or even exceed the EPA standard. For example, the Ford Mach-E and ID. km, while the Ioniq 5 missed the official estimate by 4.8 km.

Tesla is still an exception. The Model Y has a calculated cruising range of 441 kilometers in such warm weather conditions, which is far below the EPA estimate of 326 miles (524 kilometers).

However, to simulate typical user usage scenarios, none of the models’ batteries were completely drained, as Consumer Reports notes that even gasoline-powered cars are rarely driven completely empty.
