The CentOS project claims to be “open to all”
After Red Hat’s decision to restrict access to the RHEL source code, a number of RHEL-compatible distributions have spoken out recently, such as Rocky Linux finding a new way to get the source code, and:
- AlmaLinux is no longer 1:1 compatible with RHEL, and is committed to ABI compatibility in the future
- SUSE invests $10 million to fork RHEL
- Oracle mocks Red Hat, plans to keep Oracle Linux compatible with RHEL
Now, the public RHEL source code is actually the upstream CentOS Stream code on which future Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases will eventually be built.
The CentOS project board posted a statement on the official blog on Friday , saying they are “open to all” and working with the community. But there haven’t been any policy changes or major announcements yet.
The blog post reads :
“Growing a community and making it easier for folks to contribute is a critical element of success. We are excited by the interest in working with the CentOS project.
Since Spring 2023, the CentOS Board and members of the community have been working on a set of guidelines to help define what success means for CentOS and its deliverables. Building community and contribution has been a part of the guidelines from day one.
We are excited by interest from new contributors and look forward to working with them to improve the CentOS project, our collective SIG communities, and the Linux ecosystem overall.
The CentOS Board of Directors”
