Silent Message Recall: LINE’s New Premium Feature Sparks Privacy Debate

November 7, 2025 — Japanese messaging giant LINE has launched a controversial new feature that allows premium subscribers to delete sent messages without leaving any trace in recipients’ chat windows, marking a significant shift in how major social messaging platforms handle message recalls.

LINE Introduces Notification-Free Message Deletion

LINE Yahoo announced today that subscribers to its LYP Premium service (priced at 508 yen per month, approximately $3.40 USD) can now unsend messages without the standard “Message was unsent” notification appearing in the recipient’s chat. The feature will roll out gradually over the coming weeks to all eligible subscribers.

The premium feature allows users to silently recall unread messages sent within the past seven days. Users retain the option to delete messages with notifications if desired. According to LINE Yahoo, the restriction to unread messages only is intended “to ensure reliability as a communication platform.”

A Sharp Contrast to Standard Practices

This development places LINE in stark contrast to most mainstream international messaging platforms, where message recalls typically leave visible traces:

WhatsApp allows users to delete messages for everyone within 72 hours, but recipients see a placeholder stating “This message was deleted”. Telegram permits unlimited time for message recalls in personal chats and up to two days in group chats without sending notifications to recipients.

Signal offers a 24-hour window for deleting messages without notifying recipients, while Instagram does not send notifications when messages are unsent, though users may still see content through push notifications or third-party tools.

Meta’s messaging app provides a 10-minute window to unsend messages, but notifies recipients with “You unsent a message”. Snapchat allows message unsending within 10-12 minutes without recipient notification, though this doesn’t work if content has already been viewed or screenshotted.

User Demand Drives Policy Reversal

The new feature comes in response to significant user feedback following LINE’s recent announcement that it would reduce the standard unsend window from 24 hours to just one hour. The company stated that most users recall messages within the first hour after sending, leading to the proposed restriction.

However, LINE Yahoo revealed that the announcement generated substantial user backlash, with many requesting the ability to “delete messages without leaving evidence” and to “unsend messages even days after sending.” These concerns prompted the company to develop the silent unsend feature as a premium offering.

The standard one-hour unsend limit with notifications began rolling out simultaneously with the premium feature on November 7.

Privacy and Trust Implications

The introduction of notification-free message deletion raises important questions about communication transparency and platform trust. While the feature addresses user desires for privacy and mistake correction, critics may argue it could enable manipulation of conversation histories or create power imbalances in digital communications.

LINE’s approach — limiting silent deletion to unread messages — attempts to balance user convenience with communication integrity. The company emphasized that this restriction exists specifically to maintain trust in the platform.

Global Messaging Landscape

The feature highlights the varying approaches messaging platforms take toward message recalls. While some platforms prioritize transparency through visible deletion notices, others like Telegram and Signal have long offered silent deletion options. LINE’s decision to make this a premium feature represents a new monetization strategy for what has traditionally been either a standard feature or not offered at all.

As messaging platforms continue to evolve, the tension between user control, privacy, and communication authenticity remains a central challenge. LINE’s premium silent unsend feature may signal a new trend in how platforms balance these competing interests while generating revenue from advanced communication tools.
