Xiaomi’s In-House Operating System Revealed: Initial Compatibility with Android.

On August 22nd, a digital influencer leaked information indicating that Xiaomi’s in-house operating system is designed to be a universal system, with compatibility for AOSP (Android Open Source Project).

This suggests that Xiaomi’s in-house operating system may extend to various terminal devices like in-car entertainment systems, tablets, and smartwatches.

Following a path similar to Huawei’s HarmonyOS, Xiaomi is initially ensuring compatibility with Android to maintain its existing user base.

However, based on what we learned from Huawei’s developer conference, a pure HarmonyOS smartphone system is expected to emerge in the future, completely decoupling from Google.

During the Huawei Developer Conference, a Huawei Mate40 Pro with the “HarmonyOS NEXT Developer Preview” was showcased, which directly removed AOSP code from the Linux kernel, reducing the system’s redundancy by 40%.

This move implies that HarmonyOS will no longer be compatible with Android software.

As for whether Xiaomi will eventually follow Huawei in completely abandoning AOSP code, it may only be a matter of time.

Some netizens speculate that once Xiaomi’s in-house system succeeds, MIUI 15 will officially be renamed “miOS.”

However, the influencer denied this claim. Leaving aside the possibility of Xiaomi swiftly replacing MIUI 15 with its in-house system, it’s in line with Xiaomi’s practices to give this system a Chinese name, possibly something like “Xiaomi Rifle Operating System,” considering the previous origin of the name HarmonyOS, which also emerged from media reports.

Additionally, the influencer revealed that MIUI 15, based on the Android foundation, will undergo routine updates this year.

At the current stage, MIUI based on Android 14 has already incorporated some new features, such as a more user-friendly global free-floating window, pop-up app notifications, and game login redirects to apps, all of which are windowed.

The file system has also been changed to MIFS.
