YouTube is taking a stand against the use of ad-blocking plugins to bypass advertising content on its platform.

A spokesperson for the Google-owned video-sharing service recently revealed to Insider that YouTube has initiated a global campaign urging users of ad blockers to either enable ads on the website or try out its premium ad-free experience.

The spokesperson stated, “Using ad blockers on YouTube is a violation of the site’s terms of service. Advertising supports a diverse ecosystem of global creators, enabling billions of people to access their favorite content on YouTube.”

As early as June of this year, YouTube began limiting the video views of ad-blocking users as part of a limited experiment. Some users received notifications informing them that if they did not disable their ad-blocking software or subscribe to YouTube Premium, the video player would be blocked after watching three videos.

At the time, YouTube Premium (a subscription-based ad-free experience) was priced at $11.99 per month. However, this summer, YouTube quietly raised the membership price by nearly 17%, reaching $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year (equivalent to approximately $11.66 per month).

The affected users have been increasingly vocal about this change on social media platforms like X and Reddit. Some users have shared techniques on how to bypass YouTube’s ad-blocker detection using various browser extensions and other adjustments. Others firmly believe that complying with YouTube’s wishes will lead to a permanent ban on ad blockers.

Cracking down on ad blockers is a viable strategy for Google/YouTube to increase advertising revenue. Could they potentially lose some viewers due to their stance on ad-blocking?

It’s certainly possible, but it’s more likely that some of the existing ad-blocking users will whitelist the site rather than losing access altogether, resulting in an overall revenue boost.

Others may opt to support YouTube through premium subscriptions to continue enjoying an ad-free experience. Additionally, even if some users stop using YouTube, it won’t result in revenue loss since these users wouldn’t watch ads anyway.
