New Report from South Korea Leaks Apple’s Plan to Switch to OLED for iPad
A new report reveals that single-layer OLED screens will make their way to the iPad Air, 8.7-inch iPad, and iPad mini by 2026, with a new generation 12.9-inch iPad Air slated for 2027.
It has been reported that Apple has been working on transitioning the iPad Pro to OLED screens for some time.
The latest rumors suggest that the iPad Pro in 2024 and the MacBook Pro in 2026 will adopt this display technology.

Earlier reports hinted that Apple would subsequently employ OLED technology in the iPad Air and iPad mini.
South Korean publication ETNews now supports these claims and adds more specific details. It states that following the introduction of the iPad Pro in 2024, both the iPad Air and iPad mini will feature single-layer OLED screens by 2026.
The report also indicates that in 2027, Apple will incorporate OLED screens in the redesigned iPad Pro and the new 12.9-inch iPad Air.
It’s worth noting that previous expectations were for the iPad Pro to use dual-layer OLED screens. While OLED can enhance contrast and brightness, its effective lifespan is shorter, and using dual-layer OLED screens can significantly extend this lifespan.
Compared to single-layer OLED screens, the improvements with dual-layer OLED screens are substantial enough for Apple to switch suppliers to obtain this type of screen. Reportedly, Samsung initially refused to develop a dual-layer structure exclusively for Apple, leading to exclusion from the company’s plans. However, it is said that within a few months, Samsung prioritized the development of dual-layer systems to regain Apple’s orders.
ETNews did not provide detailed information on the use of dual-layer displays for any specific models. However, it claims that the 2027 revamped iPad Pro will feature “next-generation panels that enhance panel luminance through color filter encapsulation (CoE),” reducing power consumption by 20%. It could also support under-display cameras for Face ID.
One peculiar aspect in ETNews’ report is that the screen for the 2026 iPad mini seems to be listed as 8.7 inches, rather than the standard 8.3 inches for the current model.
