On November 21, Nokia announced its collaboration with NTT Docomo, the largest telecommunications operator in Japan, to deploy the next-generation Nokia Open Radio Access Network (RAN) 5G AirScale baseband solution across the commercial network in Japan, in accordance with O-RAN specifications.

Nokia claims that the new AirScale communication solution is powered by the latest ReefShark system chip technology. Due to its smaller footprint and lower power consumption, this solution is expected to provide NTT Docomo with sustainability advantages and lower operational costs.

Masafumi Masuda, the Wireless Access Development Department Manager at NTT Docomo, stated, “Nokia’s O-RAN-compliant AirScale 5G baseband solution is highly competitive, capable of connecting to any O-RU on NTT Docomo’s 5G commercial network. Its high performance and low power consumption will also reduce our operational costs and support our sustainable development.”

It’s worth noting that Nokia’s communication department has been collaborating with NTT Docomo since the 3G era, and in the 4G era, Nokia assisted the operator in formulating a multi-vendor strategy.
