openEuler Claims Top Spot with 36.8% Market Share in China's Server OS:

On December 15th, according to a forecast by IDC, openEuler commands a market share of 36.8% in the Chinese server operating system landscape, making it the leader in the country’s server operating system market for the year 2023.

According to official information from Huawei, openEuler has accumulated installations exceeding 6.1 million sets, achieving “leapfrog development” in its four years of open sourcing. It has established a comprehensive development system in technology innovation, ecological development, community cooperation, and commercial implementation. This marks the first instance in China of foundational software claiming the top market share and represents a significant milestone in the development of the country’s basic software industry.

Officials state that openEuler experienced accelerated growth after being contributed to the OpenAtom Open Source Foundation. In December 2022, the OpenAtom Open Source Foundation announced the elevation of openEuler to a project group, operating independently in governance, community operations, and fundraising. It also welcomes other open source projects, utilizing openEuler project group resources in infrastructure, operations, marketing, and more.

During the 2023 Operating System Conference held today, Academician Wu Hequan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering expressed confidence in openEuler’s future. He stated that with the efforts of tens of thousands of developers and thousands of partners in the openEuler community, it will become a solid foundation for collaborative digital infrastructure across all scenarios, contributing to a leap-forward development in China’s industrial internet.

As previously reported by IT Home, the openEuler operating system, abbreviated as “欧拉” (Oula), is an operating system designed for digital infrastructure. It supports various application scenarios such as servers, cloud computing, edge computing, and embedded systems, emphasizing diverse computing and aiming to provide a secure, stable, and user-friendly operating system. By offering deterministic assurance capabilities for applications, it supports applications in both operational technology (OT) and the integration of OT with information and communication technology (ICT).

In November 2021, Huawei announced the donation of the openEuler system, contributing the complete code and more to the OpenAtom Open Source Foundation. This signifies openEuler’s evolution from an open-source project led by founding enterprises to an industry co-building and community-driven initiative.

What is openEuler OS?

openEuler is an open-source operating system developed by the openEuler community, which is an open community initiated by Huawei.

It is designed for use in various computing environments, including servers, cloud computing, edge computing, and embedded systems.

The goal of openEuler is to provide a flexible, secure, and stable operating system that supports diverse computing scenarios.

Key features and goals of openEuler include:

  1. Digital Infrastructure Support: openEuler is tailored for digital infrastructure needs, accommodating applications in server environments, cloud computing, edge computing, and more.

  2. Diverse Computing: The operating system is built to support various computing requirements, catering to the demands of different application scenarios.

  3. Security and Stability: openEuler emphasizes providing a secure and stable computing environment, crucial for enterprise and infrastructure applications.

  4. Open Source Collaboration: The development of openEuler involves collaboration within the openEuler community, with contributions from developers and organizations beyond Huawei.

  5. Support for Deterministic Assurance: The operating system aims to provide deterministic assurance capabilities, ensuring predictable and reliable performance for applications.

openEuler’s evolution includes being contributed to the OpenAtom Open Source Foundation, signifying a transition from a project led by a single enterprise to a collaborative, community-driven initiative.

It plays a role in China’s efforts to develop and promote foundational software for various computing applications.
