January 17 – Since its launch in late 2024, Apple’s M4 Mac Mini has garnered widespread acclaim for its performance and features.

However, some users are now reporting intermittent connectivity issues with the device’s USB-C ports, causing inconvenience during usage.

User Complaints Surface

Several users have noted that peripherals connected via the USB-C ports on the M4 Mac Mini experience random disconnections. One user shared their experience in a January 15 forum post, explaining that their USB-C keyboard would periodically disconnect. To restore functionality, they had to manually unplug and reconnect the device.

The same user tested the keyboard on other Mac devices, where it functioned flawlessly, suggesting that the issue is likely specific to the M4 Mac Mini.

Wider Connectivity Challenges

Other users have reported similar problems when using USB-C hubs and docking stations. For instance, devices connected through these accessories fail to operate properly after the Mac Mini wakes from sleep, often requiring a complete reconnection to resolve the issue.

Interestingly, some reports indicate that the problem is primarily associated with the rear USB-C ports, as the front ports appear unaffected. However, other users have observed intermittent disconnections on both front and rear ports, indicating the issue may not be limited to one location.

External Drives and High I/O Workloads

Additional complaints involve external hard drives connected via USB-C. Some users report disconnections during “I/O-intensive” tasks, even when the drives are directly connected without the use of hubs.

Root Cause and Resolution

It is currently unclear whether the issue stems from hardware defects or a software glitch. If software is the culprit, Apple is expected to address the problem in an upcoming macOS 15 update. For now, affected users continue to await further guidance or a permanent fix.
