Spotify Rolls Out Major Upgrade for Free Users Worldwide, Introduces On-Demand Music Streaming
September 15, 2025 – Music streaming giant Spotify announced a significant enhancement to its free tier service today, allowing users to search and play any song on demand for the first time.
The update represents a major shift in the platform’s strategy to boost user engagement and advertising revenue.

New Features Transform Free User Experience
The streaming service has introduced three new capabilities for its free users globally:
- “Pick and Play” – Users can now directly select any song within the app
- “Search and Play” – Free users gain the ability to search for specific tracks and play them immediately
- “Share and Play” – Users can instantly play music shared by friends and artists on social media platforms
This marks a dramatic departure from Spotify’s previous mobile restrictions for free users, who were previously limited to shuffle play with restricted skip functionality.
Strategic Push to Boost Advertising Revenue
The timing of this announcement coincides with Spotify’s broader efforts to strengthen its advertising business. CEO Daniel Ek recently acknowledged that the company has been “too slow” in advancing its advertising capabilities, with ad revenue currently representing only 11% of total revenue – well short of the company’s 20% target.
By expanding free tier functionality, Spotify aims to increase user engagement and create more opportunities for ad exposure, potentially driving significant growth in its advertising segment.
Premium Features Remain Exclusive
Despite the expanded free offerings, Spotify maintains clear distinctions between its tiers. Premium-only features continue to include:
- Lossless audio quality streaming
- AI-generated playlists
- Mix functionality
However, certain personalized features like the popular “daylist” remain available to all users regardless of subscription status.
User Base Breakdown Highlights Free Tier Importance
The upgrade underscores the critical role free users play in Spotify’s ecosystem. According to the company’s latest quarterly data, free ad-supported users comprise the majority of its user base, with 433 million of the platform’s 696 million monthly active users utilizing the free tier, compared to 276 million premium subscribers.
The global rollout of these features represents Spotify’s continued evolution as it balances user acquisition, engagement, and monetization across its diverse user base while competing in an increasingly crowded streaming market.
