October 2 — Raspberry Pi today released a new version of Raspberry Pi OS, built on the latest Debian 13 “Trixie.” The codename is derived from a blue plastic triceratops character featured in Toy Story 3.

The new Raspberry Pi OS release brings several modifications to the original system, with the most noticeable being an updated desktop theme — featuring a complete set of new icons, a new font, new desktop backgrounds, and various minor adjustments to refresh the system’s appearance.

Visual Overhaul

The new font is called Nunito Sans Light, replacing the old Piboto font that had been in use for roughly the past decade. This release also includes a suite of new desktop wallpapers, once again provided by Raspberry Pi Foundation member Greg Annandale. The default wallpaper features an image of sunrise over the Drakensberg mountain range in southern Africa.

New Control Center Application

To create a cleaner interface, the new version introduces a Control Center application that replaces all the old preference applications, including Raspberry Pi Configuration, Appearance Settings, Mouse and Keyboard Settings, Screen Configuration, and Printer settings.

All these settings can now be found in the new Control Center, arranged together on the same page. For quick navigation between pages, users can hover their mouse pointer over page names on the left side and use the mouse scroll wheel to switch between them.

The Control Center is designed as a very lightweight core application that loads all functionality from a set of plugin libraries at runtime. This means it can easily be extended with new tabs by adding new controls. As a result, the foundation may add new settings pages to the Control Center in the future, and third parties will also be able to write their own settings pages for controlling custom hardware and other purposes.

Modular Architecture

Additionally, in this version, Raspberry Pi OS has made the installed software packages in the desktop image more modular, making it easier to create custom versions of the image. Users can now quickly add a desktop environment to the Lite version of the system (the command-line-only version).
