ONLYOFFICE Docs 9.1 Released: PDF Redaction Support and 400% Faster Spreadsheet Functions
The open-source, self-hosted office suite ONLYOFFICE Docs has launched version 9.1, bringing over a dozen new features and performance improvements while fixing more than 500 bugs, according to a report published by tech media outlet Linuxiac on October 16.
This comprehensive update spans multiple modules including document editing, spreadsheets, and presentations, with the most notable upgrades centered on the PDF editor, which now includes a critical redaction feature.

Enhanced PDF Security with Redaction Tool
The standout addition in ONLYOFFICE Docs 9.1 is the introduction of redaction functionality for PDF documents. This feature enables users to permanently black out and remove sensitive information such as personally identifiable information (PII) and financial data, ensuring secure document sharing. Once redacted, the information is permanently deleted rather than simply hidden, providing genuine data security.
The PDF editor has also received a complete overhaul of its annotation toolkit. Users can now draw shapes directly on documents and add notes without switching applications. Additionally, the editor supports direct insertion of charts and SmartArt graphics, allowing users to create data-driven, visually rich PDF documents within a single interface.
Dramatic Spreadsheet Performance Boost
The spreadsheet module has undergone significant optimization, particularly in its formula calculation engine. Commonly used lookup functions including LOOKUP, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, and XLOOKUP now run four times faster than in previous versions—a 400% performance improvement that significantly enhances productivity when working with large datasets.
For data analysis, pivot tables now support date filters, making it easier to analyze time-based information. The update also introduces several convenience features:
- A new “Table Design” tab that centralizes formatting management
- Parameter highlighting when entering formulas
- Double-click functionality to rename worksheets directly
- Support for viewing combo boxes and other content controls within tables
Streamlined Presentation and Document Editing
The Presentation Editor now features a dedicated “Slide Master” tab, simplifying the process of making unified layout changes across entire presentations. This centralized approach reduces the time needed to maintain consistent design throughout slideshows.
In the Document Editor, users can now use section breaks within nested content controls, providing greater flexibility in document structure. Version 9.1 also integrates a full-featured chart editor, enabling users to open and modify charts embedded from XLSX files directly within documents.
Expanded Compatibility and File Format Support
ONLYOFFICE Docs 9.1 has broadened its file format compatibility, now supporting HEIF images and HWPML documents. The suite has also added new conversion options, including PDF to TXT and PPTX to TXT, expanding interoperability with other platforms and workflows.
Mathematical content creation has been enhanced with native support for inserting MathML formulas, benefiting academic and technical users who frequently work with mathematical notation.
Availability
ONLYOFFICE Docs 9.1 is now available for download. As an open-source, self-hosted solution, it offers organizations complete control over their document infrastructure while providing compatibility with Microsoft Office formats and collaborative editing capabilities.
The comprehensive nature of this release—combining security enhancements, performance optimizations, and expanded functionality—positions ONLYOFFICE Docs as an increasingly competitive alternative in the office suite market, particularly for users prioritizing data sovereignty and open-source solutions.
