In a groundbreaking collaboration announced this week, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud have unveiled a revolutionary multicloud networking solution designed to prevent the kind of catastrophic outages that have plagued the cloud industry in recent months.
The partnership introduces automatic failover capabilities that could save businesses billions of dollars in lost revenue during service disruptions.

The New Cross-Cloud Interconnect
The joint solution combines AWS Interconnect – multicloud with Google Cloud’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect, enabling customers to establish private, high-speed connectivity between the two platforms with high levels of automation and speed. Most significantly, if AWS experiences an outage, customer data and workloads can automatically migrate to Google Cloud, and vice versa. Microsoft Azure is expected to join this multicloud redundancy framework in 2026.

The timing of this announcement is particularly significant given the massive AWS outage that occurred in October 2024. Security is built into the foundation with MACsec encryption between Google Cloud and AWS edge routers.
Customers configure this through a single “transport” resource in Google Cloud and accept it in AWS, an innovative managed construct that completely abstracts and provisions the underlying physical interconnects, VLAN attachments, and Cloud Router instances. This eliminates the need for manual configuration of complex networking components that previously required coordination between multiple teams over extended periods.

Perhaps most importantly, AWS and Google have released an open specification for network interoperability, with the API specifications published on GitHub for other cloud providers and partners to adopt.
