Google Vids Expands AI Powers with Free Video Generation, 3-Minute Music, and Direct YouTube Publishing
Powered by Veo 3.1 and the new Lyria 3 Pro model, Google’s video editing platform now offers high-quality AI video generation at no cost — alongside advanced music creation and streamlined publishing tools.
Google has significantly upgraded its AI-powered video editing platform, Google Vids, rolling out a suite of new capabilities that make high-quality video and music generation available to a far broader audience than before. The updates — which began rolling out this week — center on two flagship AI models: Veo 3.1 for video generation and Lyria 3 Pro for music creation, alongside practical tools for screen recording and direct YouTube publishing.
Free AI Video Generation for All Google Account Holders
In the most democratizing move of the update, Google has opened access to Veo 3.1 — its latest and most capable video generation model — to anyone with a free Google account. Users can now generate video clips directly from text prompts or photos at no cost, representing a meaningful step beyond the platform’s previously more restricted access model.

Free-tier users receive 10 Veo video generations per month. Those on premium plans get substantially more: Google AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra subscribers can generate up to 1,000 Veo videos per month, making the platform viable for professional and high-volume production workflows.
Anyone with a Google account can now generate high-quality video clips using Veo 3.1 — a model that until recently was reserved for paying subscribers.

For Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, Vids now offers a significantly upgraded AI avatar system, powered directly by Veo 3.1. These are no longer static talking-head figures. Users can place avatars into specific scenes and have them physically interact with uploaded objects — a product prop, a device, a branded item — against fully customized backdrops.
Place avatars into specific environments and direct their interactions with uploaded physical objects or props.
Adjust outfits, backgrounds, and visual details while keeping the avatar’s voice and identity consistent throughout.
Maintain visual identity across scenes — ideal for tutorial videos, product demonstrations, and branded content series.
Veo 3.1 delivers faster avatar creation at no additional cost compared to the previous generation system.
The avatar upgrade is part of a broader enhancement that Google says makes Vids avatars preferred “five times more often” than those on competing platforms in internal evaluations — a striking claim, though one made by Google itself.
Music Generation Up to Three Minutes with Lyria 3 Pro
One of the headline additions is the integration of Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro — Google DeepMind’s latest AI music generation models — into the Google Vids workflow. This feature is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, as well as Google Workspace customers.
The key distinction between the two model tiers matters for creators: the base Lyria 3 generates clips of around 30 seconds, while Lyria 3 Pro extends that ceiling to a full three minutes — long enough for a complete song with a proper structure. Users can specify elements like intros, verses, choruses, and bridges directly in their text prompt, giving the model structural guidance rather than simply asking for audio in a particular style.
Lyria 3 vs. Lyria 3 Pro: Standard Lyria 3 generates approximately 30-second clips — useful for background fills and short intros. Lyria 3 Pro extends generation to roughly 3 minutes and understands full song structure, including verse-chorus-bridge arrangements. Both models are integrated into Google Vids as of March 25, 2026.
The music generation capability is designed to help creators match custom soundtracks to their video content without relying on licensed music libraries. A marketer building a product pitch video can describe the tempo, genre, and mood they need and receive an original track — rather than searching royalty-free databases for something close enough. All tracks generated by Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro are watermarked with Google’s SynthID system to indicate AI-generated origin.
Chrome Extension for Screen Recording and YouTube Publishing
Rounding out the update are two production tools available to all users at no additional cost. A new Chrome extension, “Google Vids Screen Recorder,” enables users to capture their screen or record themselves from anywhere within the browser — removing the need to switch to a dedicated recording application mid-workflow.
Perhaps more significant for content creators is a new direct-to-YouTube publishing feature. Once a video is finished in Vids, users can publish it to YouTube without leaving the platform. The default privacy setting for published videos is private, giving creators a chance to review the content before it goes public — a sensible safeguard given how quickly these AI-generated projects can come together.
Availability and Access Tiers
The rollout spans multiple account types, with access levels tied to subscription tier. Free Google account holders can use Veo 3.1 video generation with the 10-per-month limit and the new screen recording and YouTube publishing tools immediately. Music generation and advanced avatar features require a Google AI Pro, Ultra, or Workspace subscription.
Workspace access note: For a limited time, through at least May 31, 2026, Business Starter, Enterprise Starter, Nonprofit, Education Plus, and Teaching and Learning add-on accounts can access generative AI features in Vids at promotional usage limits. Google has indicated that per-user usage caps may apply after that window, with further details to follow.
The broader significance of this update is the acceleration of Google’s strategy to embed generative AI throughout its Workspace suite — not as a premium bolt-on, but as part of the core product experience. With free Veo 3.1 access now available to any Google account holder, the barrier to AI-assisted video production has dropped considerably. Whether casual creators, small businesses, or enterprise teams, Google is positioning Vids as the destination for the full video production lifecycle: from first prompt to final YouTube upload.
