WordPress 7.0 “Armstrong” Released: A New Beginning for AI-Powered Website Building — 420+ Enhancements and Fixes
WordPress released version 7.0 on May 20, 2026, codenamed “Armstrong” in honor of legendary jazz trumpeter and vocalist Louis Armstrong. Beyond native AI integration, the release modernizes the backend experience, improves responsive editing, overhauls mobile navigation, and expands the design toolset available to every user.
According to the official announcement by release lead Matias Ventura, WordPress 7.0 is the project’s first major update for creators, businesses, and developers in 2026. It was made possible by more than 875 contributors from around the world — including over 200 first-time contributors — delivering more than 420 enhancements and fixes across Core and Gutenberg.
“WordPress 7.0 marks the start of a new era, laying the foundation for AI across the WordPress experience.”
— Official WordPress 7.0 announcement, May 20, 2026AI Integration at the Core
The most consequential change in WordPress 7.0 is the native integration of AI capabilities directly into the core platform. A new AI Client allows WordPress to communicate with generative AI models from providers including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, all managed from a single Connectors screen in the dashboard.
Paired with the Abilities API, the AI Client unlocks new functionality including generating and editing images, creating titles or summaries, and suggesting alternative text for media. An optional AI plugin extends these capabilities even further.
Version 7.0 also ships a new Client-Side Abilities package — the JavaScript counterpart to the Abilities API — complete with a built-in interface and command palette, enabling richer hybrid AI experiences directly within the editing workflow.
Modernized Dashboard
The administrative interface receives its most substantial visual refresh in years. The new Modern admin theme introduces a cohesive color scheme, updated customizers, color pickers, multi-site registration interface, and consistent styling across management pages. Smooth View Transitions provide animated movement between wp-admin screens, eliminating the jarring page jumps of previous versions.
A new Command Palette, accessible via ⌘K or Ctrl+K from anywhere in the admin, surfaces frequently used tools without navigating menus.
Font Management and Visual Revisions
The font library now has a dedicated management page in the backend, allowing users to upload, install, and manage fonts centrally. The page supports block themes, hybrid themes, and classic themes alike — a unified solution that previously required separate approaches.
The new Visual Revisions feature allows editors to compare any two saved versions of a page using a slider interface. A document inspector displays a summary of changes, color-coded hints, and the precise location of edits, making content history far more approachable.
Mobile Navigation and Responsive Editing
Site owners can now fully customize the mobile hamburger menu overlay using blocks and patterns within the site editor. Custom layouts, typography, embedded content, and close button styling are all available — users are no longer restricted to a fixed, default appearance.
Responsive editing has also become a first-class capability. Editors can now toggle whether a block is displayed or hidden on desktop or mobile directly within the editor, without custom code or additional steps.
New Blocks and Design Tools
Version 7.0 introduces several new blocks and expands existing ones:
- New Heading, Icons, and Breadcrumbs blocks
- Gallery block now supports lightbox slideshows
- Navigation Link block supports dynamic URLs
- Block-level custom CSS — apply precise styles to individual blocks directly within the post or page editor
- Layout controls: text indentation, text columns, width and height controls, size presets, and aspect ratio settings for wide and full-frame images
- Patterns now act as detachable single units for more isolated customization
Developer Toolbox
For developers, WordPress 7.0 enables server-side block and pattern registration using only PHP, auto-registered with the Block API — removing the need for JavaScript-based registration in many common cases. The Site Editor is also more extensible, with new routing, route validation, and a wordpress/boot package that allows plugins to build fully custom site-editor pages.
Looking Ahead
WordPress 7.0 shipped approximately six weeks behind its original target of April 9, 2026, which was planned to coincide with WordCamp Asia in Mumbai. The delay was attributed to the decision to rebuild real-time collaboration rather than ship it in an unstable state. The next major release, WordPress 7.1, is expected around August 2026, though no firm date has been confirmed.
WordPress 7.0 is available now at wordpress.org/download.
