Ransomware Group Claims to Have Breached Sony’s Entire Network and Is Auctioning Data

A ransomware organization has asserted a successful intrusion into the network of the Sony Group corporation, threatening to auction data stolen from the Japanese tech giant.

However, the good news is that the current situation does not appear to be as severe as the infamous 2011 PSN hacker attack, at least not yet.

According to Cyber Security Connect, the ransomware “newcomer” known as Ransomed.vc has claimed to have infiltrated Sony’s systems. The organization alleges that Sony is unwilling to pay a ransom to retrieve the data, so they are auctioning it.

“We have successfully infiltrated all of Sony’s systems. Since Sony is unwilling to pay the ransom, we are selling the data. Data for sale,” the organization wrote, adding that “we are auctioning the data.” It’s worth noting that these claims have not been confirmed.

Ransomed.vc has released some hacker data proofs, but Sony doesn’t seem too concerned at the moment because there isn’t much convincing information on display. The hackers have only shown screenshots of internal login pages, internal PowerPoint presentations from Sony’s Quality Assurance department (containing some test bench details), and some Java files.

The ransomware organization has also released a file tree of the entire leak event. It includes fewer than 6,000 files, which is a relatively low number considering the alleged coverage of all of Sony’s systems. It consists of “build log files,” numerous Java resources, and HTML files, some of which prominently display Japanese characters. Ransomed.vc has not yet disclosed the price for the stolen data.

While the event doesn’t seem too serious at the moment, Ransomed.vc has launched numerous attacks since its establishment earlier this month, including an attack on the Hawaii government website. It has been reported that most of its members operate in Russia and Ukraine.

In 2011, Sony’s PlayStation Network and Qriocity services suffered an external breach that resulted in the leakage of personal identity information for approximately 77 million accounts. It also caused users of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable game consoles to be unable to access services. The network outage lasted for 23 days.

In 2014, an organization called the “Guardians of Peace” also carried out a hacker attack on Sony Pictures. It was officially determined that this attack was backed by the North Korean government, and the organization demanded that Sony withdraw the movie “The Interview,” a comedy about a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, which was scheduled for release at that time.
