macOS Sonoma drops support for legacy mail app plugins.

macOS Sonoma brings many new features to the Mac, such as Game Mode, interactive desktop widgets, enhancements to PDF, Safari support for JPEG XL, and more.

While adding functions, Apple is also cutting support for some “old” functions, such as support for traditional mail application plug-ins. In the future, some third-party plug-ins will no longer be able to continue to be used on macOS Sonoma.

In macOS Monterey, which Apple released in 2021, Apple introduced the MailKit framework, which developers can use to build modern and secure plug-ins for the mail application on the Mac.

Extensions can be created to block malicious content, perform information manipulation, improve security, and more.

After two major system version updates, Apple feels that the MailKit framework is mature enough, so starting from macOS Sonoma, the system will no longer support traditional mail plug-ins.

In the future, the MailKit framework will be the only way to create plug-ins for mail.

A few days ago, AltStore, the developer of AltServer, confirmed the news to Apple :

macOS Sonoma drops support for legacy mail app plugins

macOS Sonoma will no longer support legacy mail plugins. MailKit-based plugins are the only supported method in the future.

AltServer’s mail plugin will stop working once you update, but we’re working on a new method that we hope to release soon.

While MailKit plugins are more secure, they are also more restricted than traditional plugins.

macOS Sonoma has just released the first developer beta version, and the official version will be released this fall.

If the plug-ins that users rely on have not been migrated to the MailKit framework, then do not upgrade to the latest system immediately.

It is possible that many users do not know that Apple’s mail service even supports plug-ins. Here, you may wish to take a look at the MailTrackerBlocker we have included.

It is an open source tracking and blocking plug-in for Apple mail, which can block email trackers, spyware pixels etc.
