Thief Transfers Concealed AirTag in Vancouver Car Theft Case.
In Vancouver, a woman’s attempt to track her stolen car took an unexpected turn when a thief discovered the concealed AirTag inside the vehicle and placed it on another rentable car to divert attention.
On Sunday morning, Becca Hislop and her boyfriend found their car stolen while traveling in Vancouver.
Hislop had prepared for such an emergency by discreetly installing an AirTag on her car to trace it, but her plan wasn’t foolproof.
According to Global News, watching the AirTag maneuver through the downtown traffic, the following day, Hislop used the AirTag to trace what she thought was her car.
Upon arriving at the location of the AirTag in a winery in Kelowna, she discovered the thief’s clever move – not only had the thief found the AirTag, but had also placed it on an Evo Car Share vehicle to resist tracking.
The outcome of this twist left Hislop outsmarted, while her car had been driven elsewhere. Although she couldn’t monitor the car using the AirTag when it was stolen, she eventually located the car with the assistance of the Vancouver police, minimizing the loss.
Hislop stated, “I hope this person gets what’s coming to them because we work hard, and some people think they can just cheat and take things that aren’t theirs, and it’s not fair.”
While AirTags prove helpful in recovering stolen vehicles and other property, it’s advised to share location information with law enforcement rather than attempting self-recovery.
In July of this year, four individuals were charged with carjacking and killing a driver, who had attempted to use an AirTag to recover the vehicle.
In April, the owner of a truck, instead of waiting for the police, pursued their stolen vehicle, resulting in a shootout that left the accused thief dead in the vehicle.
In August 2022, a New York man used AirTags to recover his stolen motorcycle, leading to a violent confrontation that resulted in a broken nose but no fatalities.
