Removing Logitech USB Receiver Causes Kernel Crash in Linux 6.6-rc6

Just before the release of the Linux 6.6-rc6 kernel test version today, an embarrassing error emerged this week as part of a fix within the HID subsystem.

For the past few months, unplugging a Logitech USB receiver has been causing the Linux kernel to crash.

This issue has led to numerous error reports, ranging from unplugging Logitech keyboard/mouse receivers to simply turning off USB switches connected to devices. The Linux 6.6-rc6 kernel has addressed these issues and has been marked for backporting to the existing stable Linux kernel series.

Hans de Goede from Red Hat continues to work wonders in fixing and improving Linux desktop/laptop hardware support. He has been responsible for addressing the bug related to Logitech USB receiver disconnections. Earlier this summer, Red Hat had released a series of different error reports, including USB disconnect causing kernel crashes, power_supply_uevent on USB leading to page_fault_oops, kernel module hid_logitech_dj causing crashes and USB corruption, as well as issues with Logitech unify receivers not functioning correctly, among others.

As explained in the patch that fixes kernel crashes when the receiver is unplugged, there were four race conditions related to timestamp checks that needed resolution.

This fix has been merged as part of this week’s Linux 6.6-rc6 HID fixes and will be backported to the stable Linux kernel series in the coming days. During this period, if you are using the latest Linux kernel version, please refrain from unplugging the Logitech USB receiver during the boot process to avoid kernel crashes.
