“Windows Phone” Helps Users Bypass YouTube’s Anti-Ad Block Pop-ups

October 22, 2023 – In a recent update, YouTube has strengthened its measures against ad-blocking tools such as uBlock Origin and the “strict” tracking protection mode in the Edge browser.

Users encountering these measures while trying to watch videos will see anti-ad block prompts.

As early as May 2023, reports indicated that Google had been experimenting with an anti-ad block feature on YouTube.

It would display pop-up warnings when it detected users employing ad-blocking software, restricting access to the site unless the users disabled their ad blockers or subscribed to YouTube Premium.

Recently, @endermanch, a Twitter source, shared a tweet revealing a simple method to bypass YouTube’s anti-ad block measures.

Users can achieve this by changing their browser’s User Agent (UA) to “Windows Phone.”

With the help of an official Google extension, they can switch the UA to Windows Phone and, upon revisiting YouTube, they won’t encounter the pop-up prompts while playing videos.

It’s worth noting that YouTube may address and “fix” this issue in the future to prevent the UA alteration method from bypassing their anti-ad block measures.
