SD Association Unveils SD Express Memory Card with 2GB/s Speed

The SD Association Introduces New SD Express Storage Card Speed Class, Achieving Speeds of 2GB/s for the First Time.

On Oct 31, the SD Association (SDA) has announced the latest development in SD Express memory cards, doubling the speed of microSD Express memory cards for the first time, reaching 2 GB/s.

Additionally, four new speed classes have been introduced for SD Express to ensure guaranteed minimum sustained performance levels in the new SD 9.1 specification.

These enhancements include support for multi-stream access and related power and thermal management to ensure optimal performance.

SD 9.1 is designed to help consumers identify the memory cards suitable for their devices while providing manufacturers with new tools to ensure the minimum performance of SD Express memory cards. It guides consumers in selecting the appropriate memory card type to guarantee specific application operations.

The latest generation of microSD Express utilizes the PCIe interface, delivering speeds of 1969 MB/s and 2 GB/s through the use of the PCIe Gen 4 x1 channel defined in the latest updated microSD Addendum version 8 specification. The speed boost offers product designers more storage options and SSD-level performance for various size-constrained devices that require easy maintenance or storage upgrades.

SD Express speed classes are dedicated to providing SDXC, SDUC, microSDXC, and microSDUC memory cards that are compatible with the SD Express bus.

With the continuous evolution of NAND flash memory technology, changes in storage technology necessitate defining speeds. SD Express represents one of the most significant developments in SD since its introduction in 2000.

It caters to new and evolving market demands, supporting higher performance requirements for controllers, storage, and other application interfaces.

SD Express is a perfect choice for meeting the increasing right-to-repair laws, fully supporting almost all scenarios requiring higher-speed mobile or semi-mobile memory cards.

Hiroyuki Sakamoto, President of SDA, stated, “By defining the minimum guaranteed sequential performance standards for SD Express memory cards, SDA helps device manufacturers and consumers ensure the best recording and playback capabilities for all types of content. We’ve doubled the speed of microSD Express to 2 GB/s, providing product manufacturers with more storage options to handle the most demanding storage applications, making SD Express memory cards an environmentally friendly choice and simplifying device maintenance and upgrades.”
