Ubuntu 25.04 Set for April Release with Optimized Support for Snapdragon Laptops and BitLocker-Encrypted Windows 11 Installations

The feature freeze for Ubuntu 25.04, the upcoming version of the Linux distribution, is now in effect. Canonical and the Ubuntu developer community are working towards the scheduled April release of the new version, codenamed “Plucky Puffin.”

On February 21, Canonical developer Utkarsh Gupta confirmed that Ubuntu 25.04 has officially entered the feature freeze stage and remains on track according to the planned release timeline. This means that most of the feature development for the update has been completed.

Key Milestones Before the Final Release

The next critical dates in Ubuntu 25.04’s development schedule include:

  • March 13 – UI freeze
  • March 20 – Kernel feature freeze
  • March 27 – Beta release
  • April 3 – Kernel freeze
  • April 10 – Final freeze

If everything proceeds smoothly, the stable release of Ubuntu 25.04 is expected to arrive on April 17, 2024.

Major Updates and Enhancements

Ubuntu 25.04 is set to ship with the Linux 6.14 kernel, the GNOME 48 desktop environment, and Mesa 25.0, which will provide improved graphics driver support. Additionally, GIMP 3.0 will be included in the installation package, alongside numerous underlying system enhancements.

One of the key improvements in this release is enhanced support for Snapdragon X Elite processors. The software repository will now include qcom-firmware-extract and ubuntu-x1e-settings packages to improve compatibility with these ARM-based laptops.

Furthermore, Ubuntu 25.04 will introduce refinements to its modern desktop installer, featuring advanced partitioning options, expanded encryption installation choices, and better handling of BitLocker-encrypted Windows 11 devices. These improvements aim to provide a smoother installation experience for users dealing with encrypted Windows systems.

With these updates, Ubuntu 25.04 promises to bring notable performance, compatibility, and security enhancements, making it a significant release for both desktop and laptop users.
