Timing Opportunity as Windows 10 Support Ends

With Windows 10 support ending on October 14, approximately 400 million devices worldwide are expected to be unable to officially upgrade to Windows 11, leaving them vulnerable to security risks. This presents a significant opportunity for alternative operating systems, which Zorin Group is leveraging to promote Zorin OS as a viable replacement for both Windows and macOS, emphasizing speed, security, and privacy protection.

Built for Accessibility and Longevity

Based on Ubuntu Linux’s long-term support version, Zorin OS is designed to provide familiar desktop experiences for home users, schools, and businesses while lowering hardware requirements and eliminating the telemetry functions found in mainstream operating systems.

The company claims the system can run smoothly on computers up to 15 years old, with minimum requirements of just a 1GHz dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 15GB of storage space.

Evolution and Versions

Since its initial release in 2009, Zorin OS has evolved to version 17.3 (released in March this year), offering four variants: Core, Education, Lite, and Pro. The Core and Education versions are free, while Pro costs $47.99 and includes six premium desktop layouts and additional features. The Lite version is based on the XFCE desktop environment and optimized for low-performance devices, while Core and Pro utilize GNOME Shell.

Customizable Desktop Experience

Zorin OS features the built-in Zorin Appearance application, allowing users to quickly switch between interface styles including Windows 11, Windows Classic, macOS, ChromeOS, GNOME 2, and Ubuntu themes. This flexibility helps users with different preferences adapt quickly to the new system.

Windows App Compatibility

To address application compatibility concerns, Zorin OS integrates Wine and Bottles compatibility layers, supporting most EXE and MSI-based Windows installers. The system also provides a dedicated Windows App Support layer that packages Wine with PlayOnLinux to enhance compatibility with Windows applications.

The release of Zorin OS 18 represents a strategic move to capture users looking for alternatives as Microsoft phases out support for older Windows versions, particularly targeting those with aging hardware that cannot meet Windows 11’s stringent system requirements.
