The iPhone 16 series is expected to introduce a new capacitive button, internally referred to as the “Capture Button.”

This button, codenamed “Project Nova,” has the potential to become a key selling point for the iPhone 16 series if it successfully passes initial testing phases.

The Capture Button will be positioned on the same side as the power button but slightly lower, in the area where recent iPhone models have millimeter-wave cutouts.

The millimeter-wave cutout has been relocated to the other side, below the volume buttons. Currently, the specific purpose of this new capacitive button remains unclear.

The Capture Button is anticipated to be a capacitive button, unlike traditional mechanical buttons, which physically depress when pressed. Instead, capacitive buttons detect pressure and touch, providing tactile feedback through haptic engines.

The working principle of this button is expected to be similar to the Home button on the iPhone SE, which simulates the press of a physical button through its built-in haptic engine. According to our sources, the capacitive button will incorporate force sensing capabilities, allowing it to detect external pressure and convert the force into electrical signals.

During the early development stages of the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple experimented with capacitive buttons on iPhones under the now-canceled Bongo project. Unlike the Capture Button, the Bongo module included capacitive power and volume buttons without any additional buttons.

According to our sources, the Bongo module was canceled during the EVT development stage due to unsatisfactory test results and numerous hardware issues. This cancellation provided Apple engineers with the opportunity to redesign capacitive buttons for the iPhone 16 series, promising significant changes.

Unlike the Bongo project, the Capture Button will make its debut across the entire iPhone 16 series, including the base models, iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.

However, it’s worth noting that Apple has also created a hardware configuration without the Capture Button, possibly as a backup variant in case of rising hardware failure rates.

The Capture Button will appear on devices with eSIM cards only and on devices with physical SIM card slots.

In addition to the new Capture Button, the iPhone 16 series is also expected to feature capacitive action buttons. Known as “Project Atlas,” these touch-sensitive action buttons will have a design similar to the Capture Button, utilizing strain gauges and magnetoresistive motors to provide the necessary tactile feedback.

Apart from the Capture Button and upgraded action buttons, the base iPhone 16 model is expected to sport a redesigned camera bump, with a vertical arrangement similar to the iPhone 12.

The screen sizes for the Pro models are also set to increase, going from 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches to 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively.

It’s important to note that the information provided here is preliminary and subject to change.

The iPhone 16 series is still in the early development stages, and the final design has not been confirmed, so the presence of the Capture Button on the final product is not guaranteed.
